The Vienna period (hunger rations). Living with Hitler in shelters, they subsisted mainly on cheap soups from homeless canteens and bread, which they shared. Kubizek didn't complain—for him, the most important thing was satisfying his hunger.

A contrast with Hitler. Unlike his friend, who was already a vegetarian and picky about meat, Kubizek ate everything he was given, and with relish. He didn't share Hitler's ideas about "food purity."

Treats were rare. Occasionally, when they had money, they could afford a strudel or a café au lait at a cheap Viennese pastry shop. But these were exceptions, not a system.

Warm memories of the food Hitler's mother sent him. Klara Hitler baked them homemade bread and jam, and Kubizek remembered it with gratitude as a true feast.

An ordinary, poor family of shoemakers, what else can I say?..
