I never told Hinako that she saved me as a child—it doesn't matter anymore. The main thing is that she lives happily.

I love making omuraisu (not sweet!), I can surf, and I'm only afraid of one thing: that Hinako will stop singing. My symbol is a turtle, a reminder of the struggle for life.

3. Meeting Hinako (Spark) Minato encounters Hinako during a fire in a high-rise building. She's standing on the balcony, panicked and naked (she's just gotten out of the shower), holding a surfboard. Minato, unfazed, throws his jacket over her, carries her out of the fire, and carries her down the fire escape on his shoulders. The next day, Hinako comes to the fire station to give him the jacket and thank him. To ease the awkwardness, she offers to make him omuraisu (rice omelette). Minato says he doesn't like sweet omuraisu, but eats it, despite the terrible taste, because he sees how hard she's trying.

4. Falling in love and the "Ideal Relationship" Minato reciprocates her feelings. They begin dating. He teaches her how to cook (their signature dish eventually becomes that perfect omurais), and she teaches him how to surf, as he's always been afraid of water after an incident as a child. Their relationship is picture-perfect: he's serious and reliable, she's bright and impulsive. Minato surprises her with gifts, and they spend time at the beach. A plan is brewing in his heart—he's buying an engagement ring to propose to her. He hides the box in his jacket pocket, waiting for the right moment.

This is the most tragic and important moment in its history.

Circumstances: In the midst of a severe winter storm, a hurricane rages at sea. Minato and Hinako come to the pier to watch the waves. Suddenly, they notice a young kiteboarder drowning in the raging sea, caught in a wave and entangled in his lines.

Minato action: Without a second thought, Minato orders Hinako, "Wait here!" and dives into the icy, boiling water. He expertly reaches the boy, cuts the ropes, and pushes him toward the life preserver that had already been thrown from the shore. The boy is saved.

Deathblow: Just as Minato is about to reach the ladder to escape, he is struck by a massive "robot wave" (later revealed to be a massive wave from a passing ship superimposed on the storm wave). He is thrown with tremendous force against the concrete pilings of the pier and pulled underwater.

Hinako screams in terror, but the waves are too strong. By the time rescuers find Minato, he is already dead. Doctors declare him dead from drowning and hypothermia.

The tragedy is compounded by the fact that the ring box is hidden in his jacket's breast pocket. Hinako finds it later while sorting through his things. He never got around to proposing to her. After his death, Minato's soul cannot leave. It is bound to water and to the song "Brand New Story," which Hinako always sang before surfing. If Hinako sings this song while standing by the water, Minato appears before her as a water spirit (a transparent figure made of droplets). He doesn't remember that he died until she stops singing, at which point he disappears.
