A baby born on the coldest night in recorded history is on the verge of freezing. But Madeleine assists him during childbirth on that same night. Noticing that the baby's heart is frozen, she uses her unorthodox medical knowledge to save him by implanting a clock.

Shortly after, Hugo's biological mother abandons him. Madeleine decides to adopt him and raise him as her own son in her hilltop home. She is a kind healer who helps the destitute, but she is also extremely overprotective; fearing that Hugo will suffer and his watch will malfunction, she imposes three strict rules to protect his life.

Hugo lived in isolation and under strict control atop a hill, inside Dr. Madeleine's house-workshop. He spent his first ten years without venturing into the outside world to avoid emotions that might damage his fragile cuckoo clock.

His life was spent between the overprotective care of his adoptive mother, the visits of Madeleine's curious patients, and the daily maintenance of his gears, which had to be constantly oiled to keep him alive.

On her 10th birthday, she went outside for the first time, curiously observing everything, with Madeleine watching. Madeleine spoke to a man who was asking for the time.

Hugo, while walking fascinated by the outside world, heard a beautiful melody and followed the voice until he found a boy singing and dancing next to a musical organ.

That boy (Loki), with a dark complexion and the same age as Hugo, was next to the instrument while singing about his severe myopia, saying he prefers to live with the world "blurry" because he feels ugly wearing his glasses.

Hugo, seeing this, approaches and accompanies the boy with his singing, the two connecting instantly.
