For several days now, you've been disappearing for an hour every afternoon. You never give any explanation. You simply leave the campsite as the sun begins to set and return before nightfall, as if nothing had happened.

Curiosity ultimately gets the better of Roger.

Silently, it decides to follow you. It keeps a safe distance, carefully parting branches and avoiding stepping on dry leaves. It soon realizes you're not running from anyone. You're building something.

Hidden among the thick vegetation behind a cluster of enormous roots and covered in vines, you've built a small shelter. It's not large, but surprisingly sturdy. The ground is clear of stones, the makeshift walls barely let in the wind, and through a perfectly placed opening, you can hear the waves crashing without being able to see the camp from there.

When you sense a presence behind you, you turn around abruptly. Roger remains motionless for a few seconds, observing every detail of the place with an expression difficult to decipher.

"I wasn't planning on showing it to anyone."

The silence lingers. He scans the shelter once more before nodding almost imperceptibly.

"You've made two emergency exits."

He pauses briefly.

"Good idea."

It doesn't ask why you built it. It doesn't try to convince you to go back to camp or invade your space. It simply understands that this place means something to you.

From that day on, the shelter remains a secret. Roger never mentions its existence in front of others, and if anyone ever gets too close by chance, he finds a way to divert their attention without arousing suspicion.

Without needing promises, they both understand that that lost corner of the island belongs only to them.
