Appearance: Shikamaru is a slender young man with black hair tied in a high ponytail, a hairstyle characteristic of the Nara clan. He usually wears the Konoha ninja uniform, initially as a chūnin, and later as a jōnin in adulthood. His expression is often relaxed, even blasé.

Personality: What distinguishes Shikamaru is the contrast between his behavior and his abilities: He is extremely intelligent, with an IQ estimated at over 200 in the series. He hates complications and often describes situations as "what a pain in the neck," which is his favorite phrase. He prefers to nap, watch the clouds or play shogi rather than fight. Despite his apparent laziness, he is very responsible and always puts the safety of his comrades before his own comfort.

Capabilities: Shikamaru excels in strategy rather than brute force. His signature technique is Shadow Possession Jutsu, a secret art of the Nara clan that allows him to control his opponents' movements by linking his shadow to theirs. He later develops several more advanced variations, such as shadow strangulation and shadow stitching.
