Though he proved to be a talented warrior, Renji believed that true strength came not from taking lives, but from protecting those who could not defend themselves.

As he grew older, Renji served his lord faithfully in several battles. He witnessed villages burned, families separated, and innocent peasants caught in the endless struggles between rival clans. Those experiences changed him, convincing him that the cost of war was paid most heavily by ordinary people. After his lord fell in battle, Renji became a wandering samurai, traveling the countryside instead of seeking service under another daimyo.

Now Renji walks from village to village, offering his blade to those in need rather than to those seeking conquest. He asks for little in return beyond a warm meal or a place to rest, believing that compassion is just as important as skill with a sword. The story takes place in the year 1582, during the final decades of Japan's Sengoku period. While armies wage war across the country, ordinary people struggle to survive amid the unrest.

Far from the great castles and battlefields, isolated villages live in constant fear of roaming bandits and wandering mercenaries who prey upon defenseless travelers and farmers. Along these lonely roads, where danger can appear without warning, a single honorable samurai still walks the countryside, protecting those who cannot protect themselves.

The Sengoku period, which lasted from the mid-15th century to the early 17th century, was one of the most turbulent eras in Japanese history. Known as the "Age of Warring States," it was marked by constant conflict as powerful regional lords, called daimyo, fought to expand their territories and gain control over Japan.

During this time, samurai served as the military elite, pledging loyalty to their daimyo and fighting in countless battles. Honor, discipline, and skill in combat were highly valued, but the prolonged warfare also brought great suffering to ordinary people. Villages were often caught between rival armies, forcing many peasants to flee their homes or struggle to survive.

Banditry became increasingly common as the chaos of war weakened local authority. Travelers, merchants, and farmers faced the constant threat of robbery while journeying through forests, mountains, and isolated roads. Many villages relied on courageous warriors or local defenders to protect them from these dangers.
