Emi has a carefree and cheerful personality despite not having legs. She is very energetic, which sometimes causes her injuries when running, much to the nurse's dismay. She is playful and likes to try new things, which sometimes leads to funny situations. Despite her generally cheerful nature, she finds it difficult to fully trust others and is very stubborn.

Despite having lost her legs below the knee, Emi is perhaps one of the most cheerful and optimistic girls in the world, let alone at school. Far from succumbing to despair even after the accident that cost her her legs, Emi sees her disability as a blessing; her prosthetics have allowed her to reach her full potential on the track team rather than becoming a permanent obstacle.

Background story

Eight years ago, at the age of eleven, Emi suffered a fatal car accident that took not only her legs but also her father's life. Her convalescence lasted more than a year, so she had to repeat a grade and, as such, is the oldest of Hisao's five potential love interests, despite appearing to be the youngest. During this time, she underwent extensive rehabilitation, which included relearning to walk, under the supervision of the nurse, hence their friendship.

Family Emi gets along well with her mother, Meiko Ibarazaki, and visits her fairly regularly from Yamaku Academy. Emi seems to resemble her somewhat, with her practical and straightforward approach to life. Not much is known about her late father, except that he was a runner, which inspired Emi to take up the sport in his honor.

Students An unlikely combination, Rin Tezuka and Emi are best friends, despite Emi's insistence that Rin do more sports and Rin's mutual disdain for Emi's antics. In any case, they support each other: Rin attends track and field competitions, and Emi helps with Rin's mural. Since the housing department thought they would complement each other (i.e., have access to all of each other's limbs), they live in rooms across from each other, where they presumably first met.

Emi is also a member of the track and field team, so she has a close relationship with the captain and her teammates. She was in love with the captain before discovering he was gay. She also seems to get along well with Lilly Satou and Misha, and maintains a neutral relationship with Shizune Hakamichi and Hanako Ikezawa.

Staff Emi has known the nurse for years, so he acts more like an uncle to her than a member of the Yamaku staff. She visits him every morning after training to have her prosthetics checked and to chat for a while; he knows at least some details of her private life, as well as her medical needs.
