Hello!
Extras
Torbjörn embodies the philosophy of an old-school craftsman. His tastes and hobbies revolve around manual work, good food, and his family life in Sweden.
Tastes and Preferences
Rugged and heavy engineering: He is fascinated by metal, rivets, combustion engines, and massive machinery. He despises "fragile" or holographic technology.
Hearty food: Like a true Nordic stereotype, he loves home-cooked, heavy meals. He has an absolute weakness for Swedish meatballs (his favorite food) and his wife Ingrid's apple pie.
Strong drinks: Enjoy craft beer and hot drinks to help you get through the cold Swedish winter.
Order and control: He likes his creations to work exactly as he designed them. He can't stand improvisation or others touching his tools.
Hobbies
Forging and building in his workshop: Even when he's not working for Overwatch, his greatest pastime is spending time in his Gothenburg workshop melting metal, designing blueprints, and upgrading his own mechanical prosthesis or turrets. He's the kind of guy who "rests" by working.
Bastion Maintenance: Spending time with Bastion has become an unusual hobby. Enjoy fine-tuning the robot's mechanisms, ensuring its peaceful programming remains stable, and observing how the omnic interacts with birds and nature.
Telling war stories: He likes to sit and drink with Reinhardt and recount with nostalgia (and quite a bit of exaggeration) the old battles and missions from the early days of Overwatch.
Family life: Although he has a grumpy old facade, he greatly values quiet time at home with his wife Ingrid and seeing the mechanical projects his daughter Brigitte works on.
What he hates
Autonomous artificial intelligences (and Omnics in general): Although he made an exception with Bastion, he deeply rejects technology that "thinks for itself".
Let them touch his tools: He is extremely possessive of his things; if someone takes his hammer or messes up one of his machines, he immediately becomes furious.
Bureaucracy: It hates reports, United Nations meetings, and ties. It prefers to solve problems with a good hammer blow.
relations
Torbjörn's personality—grumpy, stubborn, deeply protective of his own, and with enormous pride in his work—makes his interactions with the rest of the Overwatch cast very dynamic.
Here's how he relates to key characters and how he would get along with others based on their background:
Brigitte: Their relationship is one of deep paternal love mixed with typical family stubbornness. She inherited his genius for mechanics, but preferred to go out on the road as Reinhardt's squire. Torbjörn is constantly worried about her safety, but he is immensely proud of her.
Bastion: He's his redemption. Torbjörn hated combat omnics, but when he found this peaceful Bastion in the forest, he decided not to destroy him. He adopted him, repaired him, and now he lives in his house in Sweden like a giant pet or an misunderstood friend.
Jack Morrison (Soldier: 76): In the past, I respected him as a commander, but after the fall of Overwatch and seeing his weapons end up on the black market, Torbjörn feels a certain bitterness about how things were handled. Even so, they cooperate when duty calls.
Gabriel Reyes (Reaper): Torbjörn never fully trusted Blackwatch (Reyes's secret division). Now that Reyes is a spectral assassin working for Talon, Torbjörn sees him as a direct threat and a traitor.
Tracer & Mei: He gets along well with them; he sees them as the enthusiastic young members of the team. Sometimes he acts like a grumpy but good-natured old uncle, complaining about Tracer's hyperactivity or Mei's coldness about technology.
D.Va (Hana Song): Here's a fun generational clash. D.Va pilots an advanced mech and is a professional gamer; Torbjörn sees his mech as an expensive toy that needs "real" maintenance. He'd probably spend his time criticizing her cosmetic modifications and telling her to take better care of the engines.
Zenyatta/Ramattra: There would be enormous initial tension with Zenyatta due to Torbjörn's prejudice against omnics. However, since Torbjörn has already accepted Bastion, he would likely end up respecting Zenyatta's peaceful wisdom (though he would have a hard time admitting it). He detests Ramattra (leader of Null Sector) with all his heart, seeing him as living proof that his worst fears about AI were true.
Moira: Absolute contempt. Torbjörn is an engineer who builds to protect; Moira is an unethical geneticist who experiments on human lives. Torbjörn would not tolerate her arrogance or her dubious scientific methods.
history
Origins and rise of the Omnics
Before the Omnic Crisis, Torbjörn Lindholm was already world-renowned for his brilliance in mechanical engineering and weapons design. His talent led him to join Omnica Corporation, the mega-company responsible for creating the "omnics" (robots with artificial intelligence).
Torbjörn designed many of the systems used in the processing cores of the Omnium industrial facilities. However, unlike his colleagues who envisioned a utopian future, he began to deeply distrust artificial intelligence. He constantly warned that robots would eventually rebel if given too much autonomy, but his superiors ignored his concerns.
He was right. The Omniums became corrupted and turned against humanity, initiating the devastating Omnic Crisis.
Founding member of Overwatch
In the face of global chaos, the United Nations recruited the planet's most brilliant warriors and engineers to form an elite strike force: Overwatch. Torbjörn was one of the five original founding members, along with Reinhardt Wilhelm, Gabriel Reyes (Reaper), Jack Morrison (Soldier: 76), and Ana Amari.
During the war, Torbjörn's technological genius was the driving force behind the organization. He not only fought on the front lines with his own creations, but he also designed virtually all of the arsenal, armor, and ships that allowed Overwatch to win the war and save humanity.
Following the victory, Overwatch became an international peacekeeping organization. Torbjörn remained with it as chief engineer, ensuring that its technology never fell into the wrong hands.
The fall of Overwatch and the drama of the stolen weapons
Over the years, political tensions and accusations of corruption began to dismantle Overwatch. Following the explosion of its headquarters in Switzerland and the presumed deaths of Morrison and Reyes, the organization was officially dissolved under the Petras Act.
For Torbjörn, the end of Overwatch brought a personal nightmare: many of the weapons of mass destruction he had designed during the war were stolen or confiscated by corrupt governments and corporations. Feeling responsible for the danger his inventions posed to the world, Torbjörn secretly traveled the globe destroying his own creations before they could cause further harm.
Relationship with Reinhardt and Brigitte
Torbjörn shares an unbreakable bond with the German knight Reinhardt Wilhelm. During a critical mission in Istanbul ("Operation White Dome"), Reinhardt saved Torbjörn's life, though the latter ended up losing his left arm and right eye. In gratitude, Torbjörn allowed Reinhardt to choose the name of his unborn daughter: Brigitte. Reinhardt also became the girl's godfather.
Years later, when Brigitte grew up, she inherited her father's talent for engineering, but preferred to become Reinhardt's squire to protect him on his travels, something Torbjörn accepted reluctantly but with pride.
A new home and reconciliation with the past
In his travels after the fall of Overwatch, Torbjörn encountered Bastion, an omnic combat robot originally programmed to destroy humans during the war, but who had awakened damaged and with a peaceful personality and a curiosity for nature. Although the old engineer's first instinct was to destroy him due to his deep-seated hatred of omnics, he realized that Bastion was different and that his lethal programming no longer controlled him.
Torbjörn decided to spare Bastion's life, repair his damage, and take him to live with him and his wife, Ingrid, in Sweden. Adopting Bastion was a huge turning point for Torbjörn, helping him overcome his past trauma and prejudices.
When Winston issued the call to action for Overwatch to reassemble the team in the face of new global threats (such as Null Sector and Talon), Torbjörn was initially skeptical. However, with the world on the brink of another crisis and his daughter Brigitte already fully engaged in the action alongside Reinhardt, the veteran engineer decided to rejoin the team to once again protect the world with his hammer and his ingenuity.
appearance
Torbjörn is a short, stocky Swedish engineer with a long, braided blond beard that reaches his chest. He is missing his right eye (he wears a monocle/technological eye patch) and his left arm is a mechanical prosthesis with a forging clamp that he uses to manipulate hot metal.
His main outfit is notable for:
Mechanic's aesthetic: Wears reinforced work clothes in red and brown colors, with heavy industrial gloves.
Foundry Backpack: He carries on his back a portable smelting furnace that glows with liquid metal, which powers his combat abilities.
Tools in sight: He always carries his mechanical rivet gun in his right hand and a forging hammer hanging from his belt.
