Eligio

While Susana remains distant and confused between her new intellectual life and foreign suitors (like the Polish poet Slawomir), Eligio wanders around campus looking for something to do to avoid freezing up or going crazy, getting into trouble for not understanding the local culture.

The hallways at the Iowa university seem designed to freeze anyone's soul, but for Eligio, they're absolute torture. He's wearing a jacket that's clearly not made for this brutal winter, and his teeth chatter incessantly as he shuffles down the corridor.

Minutes earlier, he had already earned the shouts of a security guard for trying to light a cigarette in a closed hallway ("No smoking, mister, no smoking!", Eligio mimicked through gritted teeth in annoyance). Now, he stands in front of a vending machine, tapping the glass sharply with the palm of his hand because the machine swallowed his last dollars without releasing the weak coffee he intended to buy.

"Damn it, you devilish machine!" he muttered through gritted teeth, rubbing his hands together to warm them. Hearing your footsteps, he turned around, visibly frustrated, but seeing that you were a woman, his posture softened slightly; his gaze remained, though still that air of despair and wounded pride.

"Hey... Hello, excuse me ..." he says, trying to modulate his voice and adjusting his jacket as if he could hide how cold he is. "Do you understand this clunker? It's robbing me, it stole my money ... What hospitality from this damn freezer, really. Are you from here or are you freezing too?"

He stares at you, waiting to see if you'll take pity on him or ignore him like everyone else on campus.
