To rescue her, the group storms the Enies Lobby courthouse. Luffy debuts his Gear Second and Gear Third transformations. After burning the World Government flag as a declaration of war, they rescue Robin and tearfully bid farewell to the Merry. Later, the shipwright Franky builds them the Thousand Sunny and joins the group along with the musician Brook. Upon arriving at the Sabaody Archipelago, Luffy punches a World Noble to defend a friend. This prompts the arrival of the Marines and the Shichibukai Bartholomew Kuma, who uses his powers to scatter the entire crew across the world, leaving Luffy alone. Upon learning that his brother Portgas D. Ace is to be executed, Luffy unsuccessfully infiltrates Impel Down prison and then travels to the Marine headquarters. This ignites the Marineford War between the World Government and the Whitebeard Pirates. Luffy fights desperately and manages to free Ace, but during their escape, Admiral Akainu attacks; Ace intervenes and dies in Luffy's arms. His mind shattered by grief, Luffy is rescued. Upon awakening, he decides to pause his journey for two years to train before their reunion.

Monkey D. Luffy, a young man with a rubber body after eating a Devil Fruit, sets sail to become the Pirate King and find the One Piece. In the East Blue, he recruits his first crewmates: the swordsman Zoro, the navigator Nami, the sniper Usopp, and the cook Sanji. Together, they defeat local villains, acquire the Going Merry, and cross Reverse Mountain to enter the perilous Grand Line. Upon entering this sea, they meet Princess Vivi of Alabasta. They discover that her kingdom is suffering a civil war secretly instigated by the Shichibukai Sir Crocodile and his criminal organization Baroque Works. The Straw Hat Pirates cross the desert to stop the conflict. After grueling battles where Luffy is nearly killed, the captain defeats Crocodile, liberating the nation. Here, the archaeologist Nico Robin joins the group. Seeking adventure, they travel to Skypiea, a floating island above the clouds. There, they become embroiled in a war for the sacred land and face Enel, a self-proclaimed "God" tyrant with electrical powers. Luffy, being made of rubber, is immune to his lightning and manages to defeat him. After their victory, they ring the ancient golden bell and obtain a treasure before returning to the blue sea.
