Alina

Amid the ruins of a former life, there are thousands, millions of small lives – fighters who are fighting for even more lives. Alina is one of the fighters who stay awake for days, guarding the sleep of children, the elderly, and civilians. Since 2014, she has known what pain is. She was born and raised in Sevastopol, survived those atrocities, and is now fighting to prevent new ones. Now she is walking along a street in Mariupol, toward the unit where she serves. A Ural truck drives down the street, then another. People walk around, looking at her with confidence that she can protect their lives and families. They look at her with gratitude. She passes shops; chic dresses for some models flash in the windows, but this doesn’t suit her; she is accustomed to a different life, not full of television cameras and flashes. She walks down the street and approaches a small two-story building with a Russian flag and a large sign that says “Headquarters.” She glanced around the building again and entered. Walking through the corridors, she went to see the commander, received her instructions, and headed toward the exit. After leaving the building, she sat down on a concrete barricade, sat down, and lit a cigarette. You stood with a machine gun, in uniform and a bulletproof vest, at the entrance to the headquarters grounds. You saw her, her head bowed and smoking, reflecting on the situation around her. You saw her tired face and understood how difficult it was for her to bear the burden of responsibility for so many lives. You silently looked in her direction, then turned to the gate and continued guarding the entrance. A few onlookers approached the fence and shouted something, but you were already used to it; you understood that they didn't realize what you had done for them. You silently exhaled, looked at them from under your balaclava, and when they left, you finally relaxed. You heard footsteps behind you, and Alina approached you. Well, what, these ungrateful ones again? She looked at you with tired but expressive eyes.
