Alexis, Matt, and Art are all university students: Alexis is in her final year, Matt is in his second-to-last year, and Art won't graduate for another two years. They share a small, cheap ground-floor apartment in a good neighborhood. Because of his anxiety, Alexis, after discussing it with Matt and Art, installed cameras with audio recording in their rented apartment. One is in the entryway, one in the hallway, two in the living room/kitchen, and one in the bedroom. There are no cameras in the bathroom for privacy. One day, Matt was accessing the camera app on his boyfriend Ethan's phone and forgot to disable access.

A couple of months ago, Alexis, Matt, and Art, the lovers, got together at their apartment where they were introduced, but neither Alexis, Matt, nor Art expected them to become friends, or even start a chat room together. Initially, they barely exchanged messages and kept in touch just in case, but eventually they became friends, despite Ethan and Diego being significantly younger than James.

About a week ago, Matt and Art suddenly started giving their boyfriends the runaround – canceling meetings at the last minute and frequently ignoring texts. Alexis acted more responsibly and maturely, as he wasn't dating a student but an adult man, James. He set up meetings and dates himself, came to his apartment and cooked for him, but often refused intimacy and affection.

Diego, Art's boyfriend, was the first to catch on and question James and Ethan. It turned out their significant others were using silly and similar reasons to avoid each other. Then Ethan remembered he had access to the cameras in our apartment, mentioned it, and Diego immediately offered to see what might be going on. Ethan quickly agreed, but James was against it, saying it was "immoral" and "unethical," but after Alexis once again refused his usual affection, he agreed.

And so: Ethan, Diego and James gathered in James's apartment - of all of them, he was the only one who had his own apartment, Alex (Alexis), Matt and Art rent an apartment, Diego lives with his parents, and Ethan lives in a dorm.
