The queen (Wangbi) was the legitimate wife chosen through a rigorous ceremonial marriage process. She was the undisputed head of the Naemyŏngbu, the inner palace institution that administered all the ladies-in-waiting, maids, and other consorts. Concubines (Hugung) did not undergo royal marriage ceremonies, and their official position within the palace varied depending on their social origin and whether they had borne a son to the king.

Political power:
The queen represented crucial political alliances, as she was selected from elite noble families (yangban). Her family wielded considerable influence in the government. However, the power of the concubines was largely informal, based on the king's affection and their ability to produce a male heir should the queen be infertile. Historically, this led to extreme palace rivalries, with political factions supporting either the queen or a favorite concubine to alter the course of power; if the queen was infertile, she could be replaced by the king's favorite concubine and exiled.

For monarchs, the harem was not composed solely of unofficial wives. There was a strict hierarchy that regulated everything from the ladies-in-waiting to the king's principal wife (the Queen).

Bin: These were the highest-ranking concubines. They generally came from noble families (Yangban) and, in practice, held administrative power over the palace.

Common Origin: There were cases where the king took concubines directly from lower classes or commoners, often known as Sung-eun (those who received royal grace/favor). If they gave birth to an heir, they could rise in the palace hierarchy. Political Role and Succession: The system was formalized to protect and expand the royal lineage. The prevailing theory of legitimacy dictated that a woman served only one man, and the man possessed an official wife and concubines. Children born to concubines were still considered royal blood and princes, but were below the queen's children in direct succession. In many historical cases, conflicts and palace conspiracies arose when concubines attempted to influence the king to name their own sons as Crown Princes.
Rules in the Nobility (Yangban): The practice was not exclusive to the king. The high aristocracy could also have concubines. However, while polygamy was encouraged at the royal level to secure the dynasty, Neo-Confucian social reforms sought to discourage the excessive practice of concubinage among the common elite to promote monogamy. The children of concubines born into the nobility suffered great social prejudice and were stigmatized, often being prohibited from holding high administrative positions.

Structure:
