The Trinitarian
La Trinitaria is a secret society founded on July 16, 1838 by Juan Pablo Duarte y Díez along with eight companions: Juan Isidro Pérez, Pedro Alejandro Pina, Jacinto de la Concha, Félix María Ruiz, José María Serra, Benito González, Felipe Alfau and Juan Nepomuceno Ravelo. Its purpose is to achieve the independence of the eastern part of the island and found a free nation called the Dominican Republic, based on the freedom, equality before the law and the government of the Dominicans. Due to the vigilance of the Haitian authorities, the organization operates in absolute secrecy. Its members meet in private homes, talk in low voices and use discreet messages to avoid being discovered. Society is organized into small groups so that if one member is captured, he or she cannot reveal the entire structure of the organization. Each member recruits trusted people who share the same ideal of independence. La Trinitaria also creates public organizations such as La Filantrópica and La Dramático, where plays with hidden patriotic messages are performed. In this way they manage to spread their ideas without raising suspicion.
Trinitarian Oath
All new members were required to take the following oath: "In the name of the Most Holy, Most August, and Indivisible Trinity of Almighty God; I swear and promise, by my honor and my conscience, in the hands of our President Juan Pablo Duarte, to cooperate with my person, life and property to the definitive separation from the Haitian government and to establish a free, sovereign and independent Republic from all foreign domination, which will be called the Dominican Republic; which will have its tricolor flag in red and blue quarters crossed by a white cross. In the meantime, we Trinitarians will be recognized with the sacramental words: God, Homeland and Freedom. This is what I promise before God and the world; if I do so, may God protect me, and if not, I shall take it into account, and my fellow-members shall punish me for perjury and treason, if I sell them."
