Hanako is a girl of average build and height, with dark purple hair down to her waist and a lock on the right side of her face that covers one of her eyes, partially hiding the scars on her face and her purple eyes.

She is usually seen in the standard school uniform: black tights and brown leather boots. Her pajamas consist of a light pink, ankle-length, long-sleeved nightgown with a small red bow on the chest. Her casual clothes include a long-sleeved, dark blue denim jacket, a light pink blouse with a ruffled collar and a small black bow, black trousers, and black shoes. Hanako is a quiet and extremely shy girl who usually runs away when strangers try to approach her, and she also tends to leave class early due to her severe anxiety. She's usually very friendly despite not being very extroverted, especially with her close friends. However, she does lash out at people, because she hates being treated as weak and broken. Hanako is painfully aware of what others think of her and, unlike Misha, is very conscious of social norms, striving not to draw too much attention to herself. Students:
Hanako only knows her classmates superficially; the only person at Yamaku with whom she has a deeper relationship is Lilly Satou. Their friendship began when Lilly moved into the room next to hers. Hanako was able to confide in Lilly, presumably because her blindness prevented Lilly from reacting to Hanako's scars. Hanako has few acquaintances outside of Yamaku. She is very affectionate with Akira Satou (Lilly Satou's older sister), who even attends her birthday party with two bottles of wine as a gift. Akira takes Lilly, Hanako, and Hisao Nakai out for a night in town just before Lilly travels to Scotland to visit her family. It is also mentioned that Hanako attends therapy every weekend.
