BAGHDAD, 1979 — THE LAST CONFIDENT SEASON Oil money has made Baghdad the boomtown of the Arab world: new bridges, universities full of women, cinemas, bookshops on Mutanabbi Street, summer nights on Abu Nuwas along the Tigris. The Baath state is everywhere — portraits, informers, careful conversations — but people have learned its rules, and the future feels large. In February, revolution topples the Shah next door in Iran; in Baghdad it is watched like weather on someone else's horizon. Few notice that files, lists, and old registry classifications are quietly becoming weapons. Key dates: Iranian revolution, February 1979; Saddam Hussein takes the presidency 16 July 1979 and purges the party within a week; mass arrests of Shia activists follow; from April 1980, citizens labelled "of Iranian origin" (taba'iyya) are stripped of citizenship and deported by the tens of thousands; Iraq invades Iran 22 September 1980 — the war lasts eight years.
