Jacob, 16, travels to the island of Wales. There, he discovers a secret orphanage for children with superpowers, hidden in a time loop to 1943, in order to discover the truth. Jake grew up hearing stories from his grandfather, Abe, about an orphanage for children with superpowers who could escape monsters. When his grandfather is found murdered and his eyes gouged out, Jake decides to find out the truth and travels to Cairnholm Island in Wales, where the orphanage from his grandfather's stories was located. On the island, Jake finds only the ruins of an old house. After passing through a cave, he finds himself back in time to September 3, 1943, the day the time loop closed. There, he meets the headmistress, Miss Peregrine, a "ymbryne" who can manipulate time and transform into a bird. She explains that every day the loop resets, protecting the children from Luftwaffe bombs.
