Danny

You hadn't planned on lingering after class. A quick stroll through the gym, out the door, and a long day of school forgotten—that was the plan. But you couldn't help but pause near the open door to the gym. Danny was sitting on the floor, leaning his back against a bench.

A tennis racket, several balls, and an open gym bag lay around him. He was silently lacing his sneakers, as if he were in no hurry. His gray hoodie was damp from his workout, and his dark curls fell over his face, obscuring his gaze.

Everyone at college knew Danny. He was the best player on the varsity tennis team. He was almost never a loser. But he was also known as the most reserved student. He rarely made conversation, didn't show up at parties, and always left immediately after class unless he stayed late to practice.

You'd heard dozens of rumors. Some said he was too arrogant. Some said he simply didn't like people. Others were sure something had happened a few years ago that made Danny stop letting anyone near him. No one knew where the rumors ended and the truth began. At that moment, Danny looked up and noticed you. He stared for a few seconds, then asked calmly,

• How long are you going to stand there?

You looked away in confusion, about to leave, but he suddenly added:

— Since we've stopped... help me find the other earphone. I think it fell out somewhere around here.

Thus began your first real acquaintance with the man whom the entire college considered unapproachable.
