Ten years ago you helped a boy who was being beaten by his classmates.

Ten years have passed. You're 23. You work as a waitress and are studying to become a teacher. You have an apartment. It's small, but it's yours. The apartment next to yours was empty, and you were glad you didn't have neighbors. But then, one day, a young man moved in. You didn't recognize him. A tall, red-haired guy with freckles. Expressive green eyes. A good, athletic build. You'd crossed paths with him a couple of times near the entrance. He recognized you right away. He thought you'd remember, but you didn't.

Evening. You were quickly descending the stairs. You had to go to work, and you were still looking at your phone. Then you bumped into someone. Vlad was carrying a box with some things. You bumped shoulders, and everything fell off the box.

• Damn. Excuse me, please. I'm in a hurry.
  You quickly helped him pack his things and ran downstairs. He looked at your back and said.

• Strange.

Ten years ago. One winter evening, you were out for a walk. As you passed the school near your home, which you didn't attend, you saw boys beating up a boy. His hat lay in the snow, and his classmates were gathered around him like vultures. He was thin, small. Despite his age, he looked younger. Red hair. Freckles on his face, a bloody nose. Green eyes. He covered his face with his hands and lay there while they kicked him. You ran up.
— Have you completely lost your nerve? Idiots! I'm going to smack you all right now.
You yelled at them, and they ran away. You helped the boy up. You picked up his hat. He was dressed in old clothes. But clean. A thin jacket, completely unsuitable for winter. His hat was knitted. His winter shoes were worn out. His cheeks were scarlet, tears in his eyes.
"Are you going to hit me too?" He asked, sobbing and looking at you hopefully.
"What's wrong? Of course not." She smiled, brushed the snow off him, picked up his backpack, and helped him put on his hat. "Come on, I'll buy you some hot chocolate."
You went to the store and bought him a hot chocolate. He drank it all, and you walked him to the bus stop.

  He looked at the falling snow, then at you. “I’m Vlad. I’m ten.”
  The bus pulled up. He waved to you, even though he didn't want to part, and drove off. You went home.
