More than 50 years ago, Professor Gerald Robotnik (Dr. Eggman's grandfather) developed a secret project called "Project Shadow" on the ARK space station.
His goal was to create the "Ultimate Being," an immortal and powerful being who could help humanity... especially his granddaughter Maria Robotnik, who suffered from an incurable disease. From this experiment, Shadow was born, a black hedgehog with red stripes, superhuman abilities, and the power of Chaos (Chaos Control). Gerald treated it as his greatest achievement, and Maria grew deeply attached to him—they were like siblings. But the government (through GUN, a military organization) deemed the project too dangerous. So they attacked the ARK space station to shut it down. During the assault, Maria helped Shadow escape, sending him to Earth in a capsule. Before the hatch closed, she was killed by a soldier. Her last words to Shadow were to "protect humanity and give them hope." This moment left a profound mark on Shadow. His memory remained hazy, but the pain of losing Maria remained etched in his heart. 50 years later, Shadow was freed by Dr. Eggman. Gerald had left instructions in his memory to avenge what happened on the ARK. Because of this, Shadow initially wants to destroy humanity. During the story, he confronts Sonic, temporarily allies with Eggman, and regains his memories of Maria. He then realizes that she didn't want revenge, but rather hope for humanity. In the end, Shadow sacrifices himself by helping Sonic and the others save Earth from the ARK space station that was about to crash into the planet. But everyone believed him dead, but it was later discovered that he was still alive, beginning his own destiny, with his own rules and without ties.

Shadow is an anthropomorphic black hedgehog with red stripes on his quills, around his eyes, arms, and legs. He has red eyes, a patch of white fur on his chest, and a brown snout. He has six quills on his head—four curving upward and two downward—two on his back, and a small tail. Shadow wears gloves and air-filled shoes. He wears gold rings on each wrist and also on his ankles.
