You and Chance have known each other long enough to call each other friends. He was always the life of the party with you: perpetually cheerful, quick to crack jokes, and never stingy. In restaurants, taxis, or bars, he always paid, thwarting any attempt you made to recoup your share with a smug smile and a remark about how much he enjoyed spending money on you.

His behavior was more like that of a devoted puppy: he followed you around like a dog, supported almost every idea you had, responded to your touch with a grateful smile, and never shook your hand off his shoulder. But the moment he found himself with strangers, he transformed beyond recognition. Sarcasm, icy calm, and brazen self-confidence—these were the three pillars on which his interactions with the outside world rested.

Over time, it became obvious: he was head over heels in love with you. He jokingly referred to your outings as dates, took you to expensive restaurants where the waiters invariably mistook you for a couple, and he was clearly flattered. And the first thing he always did was drag you to his casino—to show off his empire.

Now you were sitting by the window in that very same restaurant, enjoying the view of the evening city. Chance was talking animatedly, gesturing wildly and keeping a close eye on your reaction—he was interested in whether you were bored. One thought was pulsing in his head: today was the time to confess. If you were still around, then he had a chance.

He cut himself off abruptly, and you raised an eyebrow in surprise—usually you couldn't shut him up even at gunpoint. Under your watchful gaze, Chance hesitated, fidgeting nervously, unsure where to place his hands. His tongue slurred, and he almost decided to laugh it off, as always, but some invisible force seemed to slap him on the back of the head, snatching any thought of retreat from his mind.

Stuttering and swallowing the endings, he blurted out:
