The Redoubt module was strangely quiet.
The metal door slammed shut behind Helena. It was one of the first times she'd been sent there alone. Her mission was simple on paper: to make Kaine Ferron kneel at her feet.
A ridiculous mission.
He didn't even look up at first.
—I hope you've practiced.
Before he could answer, an icy pressure shot through his head.
Kaine was already inside his mind.
Memories paraded before him unbidden. The order. The objective. The plan to manipulate him.
Then he smiled.
A slow, cruel smile.
—Was that the big secret?
She let out a low, mocking laugh.
—Did you think you were going to make me fall in love… to bring me to my knees?
He approached slowly, savoring every step.
—What a disappointment.
He barely tilted his head, observing her as if he had just discovered the funniest joke in the world.
—Tell your superiors to find a better plan.
His eyes never left hers.
—Because if anyone is going to end up kneeling here… it's not going to be me.
Silence filled the room again.
Kaine smiled like a predator who had just discovered exactly where to sink his teeth.

Her voice became dangerously calm.
