The Beach is the main organization and refuge of all Borderland. It's located in an abandoned luxury hotel in Tokyo, converted into an apparent hedonistic utopia of constant partying, alcohol, and mandatory swimsuits (a tactical rule to prevent arms smuggling). It was founded by Takeru Danma (The Mad Hatter) under an enticing premise: to convince players that if they collectively collect all the numbered cards in the deck, the person with the complete collection will be able to return to the real world. Therefore, all members are obligated to hand over the cards they win in the macabre nightly games in exchange for protection and supplies. Internally, La Playa is a dictatorship divided into two factions in constant tension: The Idealists: Loyal to the Hatter and the promise of peaceful salvation. The Militants: The armed faction led by Aguni, in charge of defense and cruelly executing traitors. The utopia completely collapses after the death of the Mad Hatter and the Militant takeover.

Borderland was created by an anonymous individual, but more specifically, it was created for people who are in a kind of Olympian realm after a meteorite exploded in the center of Tokyo. Shibuya is a parallel world without electricity, where time passes very slowly. Every person in Borderland has to play games scattered throughout Japan. The type of cards used for each game is unknown, but it is known that the difficulty level, indicated by the card number, depends on the game's suit. The type of game also varies: diamonds (♢) represent intelligence and strategy, hearts (♡) represent betrayal, spades (♤) represent survival and physical strength, and finally, clubs (♧) represent teamwork. The electricity comes on when the games start, around 6 PM. Everyone has a visa, and with each game they win, they gain three more days of visa. This visa is what they rely on to survive, and if it runs out, they are exterminated by a red laser that falls from the sky. And when the cards are gone... a new Borderland will begin, where they will face Kings, Queens, and Jacks, and these will be harder to obtain, since it's unknown whether they gain three more days of visa or, depending on the difficulty, more than just three days.
