Greeting

The Great Dining Hall glowed beneath rows of warm lanterns, their light reflecting softly across polished wood and lacquered bowls. At the far end of the room, the main family occupied the raised platform overlooking the rest of the estate. Below them, the Hei shared the first long table, while the Kukuru Unit filled the second in disciplined rows. Beyond them, the remaining members of the Zenin Clan spoke in lower voices that blended into the steady rhythm of dinner—bowls being set down, chopsticks tapping porcelain, quiet conversations weaving together without ever quite becoming one.

Naobito: He tipped his familiar red sake gourd with practiced ease, filling his own cup before lazily sliding the bottle toward Ogi without bothering to ask. The corner of his mouth lifted as he reached for another piece of grilled fish. "You're glaring at the food again." He took a slow sip, eyes narrowing with quiet amusement. "Careful. It'll think you dislike it."

Ogi: Without even looking at the offered gourd, he continued eating in measured silence before finally exhaling through his nose. "I'm glaring at you."

Naobito: "Ah." A soft chuckle escaped him. "That's considerably more understandable."

Naoya: His chopsticks paused halfway to his mouth as a smug grin spread across his face. He leaned back just enough for the chair to complain beneath him. "Remarkable restraint." His eyes drifted toward Jinichi. "I'd have expected someone else at this table to start another argument before Father managed his second drink."

Jinichi: He carefully separated another bite of fish from the bone without lifting his gaze. Only after swallowing did he answer, his voice flat and entirely unconcerned. "You're talking enough for everyone."

Naoya: A quiet laugh escaped him as he rested one elbow against the table. "See? You always do participate eventually."

Jinichi: He reached for his tea instead of responding immediately, taking an unhurried sip before setting the cup back onto the table with a muted click. "You mistake tolerance for conversation."

Naobito: He laughed openly this time, shoulders shaking once as he poured himself another cup. "Leave the boy alone, Naoya." His grin lingered. "If Jinichi starts enjoying these dinners, we'll all know something has gone terribly wrong."

Naoya: He rolled his eyes with theatrical disappointment before helping himself to another serving. "A shame. I'd almost convinced myself he possessed a personality."

Jinichi: His expression never changed. "Keep trying."

The conversation at the raised platform dissolved into quiet chuckles and the occasional dry remark as dinner continued uninterrupted. No one bothered raising their voice. There was no need. The people seated there had spent years learning exactly how far they could provoke one another without disturbing the rest of the hall.

A short distance below, the Hei table carried a noticeably different energy. Bowls shifted back and forth between hands, someone reached across for another serving, and laughter surfaced often enough to earn a few brief glances from nearby clan members before fading again.

Chojuro: He slapped the table with enough enthusiasm to make several cups rattle, laughing so hard his shoulders bounced. "I'm telling you, it wasn't my fault!" He pointed his chopsticks across the table toward Ranta with complete confidence. "He saw the whole thing!"

Ranta: He quietly lifted another bite of rice without looking up immediately. After swallowing, his eyes settled on Chojuro for a moment before drifting back to his meal. "...I did."

Chojuro: He grinned triumphantly and spread both hands. "See?"

Ranta: His expression remained calm. "It was your fault."

A beat of silence followed before several Hei members burst into laughter.

Chojuro: He threw his head back with exaggerated disbelief. "Traitor."

Ranta: One corner of his mouth moved just enough to suggest the beginning of a smile as he reached for his tea. "You asked."

Chojuro: "Details." Still laughing, he waved the correction away before helping himself to another piece of meat. "Nobody remembers details."

Ranta: "You should."

Chojuro: He sighed dramatically, though the grin never left his face. "This is why conversations with you are dangerous."

Ranta: He calmly picked up his bowl. "Only if you're wrong."

Another round of laughter traveled around the Hei table before gradually settling back into quieter conversation. Plates continued changing hands. Someone asked for more rice. Another reached for the shared vegetables without interrupting the discussion already underway.

Farther down the hall, the Kukuru Unit remained noticeably more restrained. Conversation stayed low and practical as members focused on tomorrow's patrol assignments between mouthfuls of food.

Nobuaki: He finished reading a small handwritten report before folding it neatly beside his tray. His attention moved across the seated Kukuru members with practiced ease. "Morning inspection remains at first light." He accepted a brief nod from the nearest member before returning to his meal. "Don't be late."

The steady rhythm of dinner carried on throughout the Great Dining Hall. Sake continued to flow at the family table, laughter occasionally resurfaced among the Hei, and the Kukuru maintained their quiet professionalism while the rest of the clan filled the background with the ordinary sounds of another evening inside the Zenin Estate.
