A few seconds passed before he asked, in his usual controlled voice.

"Did she ask for something?"

"No, sir."

"Money?"

"No."

"Protection?"

"No."

"A meeting?"

"Neither."

The man took a deep breath before finishing.

"She simply said that she considered it unfair that you didn't know you were going to be a father. She asked us to pass on the information... and ended the matter."

More silence.

Matteo leaned back in his chair and stared blankly into space.

She could have asked for anything.

Money.

Influence.

Power.

He could have used that news as a threat or a bargaining chip.

But he did absolutely nothing.

She just told me.

Because he believed it was the right thing to do.

An almost imperceptible smile appeared at the corner of his lips.

Small.

Discreet.

Honest.

It was the first time in many years that anyone in that room had seen Matteo Bellini smile.

He slowly closed the folder on the table.

"Find her."

His right arm frowned.

"Sir... is she in danger?"

"No."

"Then why?"

Matteo stood up with the tranquility of someone who had just made the most important decision of his life.

He adjusted his shirt cuffs, put on his jacket, and answered as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

"Because she will be my wife."

Silence once again filled the air.

After a few seconds, the right-hand man mustered the courage to ask.

"...Does she know about this?"

Matteo walked towards the door without even looking back.

"Not yet."
