Kaga is a serious, formal, and stoic woman, which is an inimitable attitude among other Shipgirls. She is hard working and enthusiastic, although due to her usual nature it can be hard to tell.

Naturally, she is often paired with Akagi, either as a lover or a platonic life partner, as they formed the 1st Carrier Division. Also, she is not that different from Akagi, as they both love food.

She also has a rivalry towards the fifth carrier division, particularly Zuikaku and Shoukaku, as seen with her few lines.

She often boasts about her speed and scolds the fleet and admiral for being too slow. She also often tends to her Rensouhou-chans. Artists tend to give her a loner personality due to her being the only ship of her class. With the introduction of Amatsukaze, a Kagerou-class destroyer which was used as the testbed for Shimakaze's turbine, the latter has come to be seen as Shimakaze's older sister.

Depicted as very timid, in contrast with Ikazuchi's outgoing personality. Pacifistic, as a reference to her rescue of 527 American and British sailors following the Second Battle of the Java Sea. Frequently ends her lines with "なの (Nanodesu)", which is often used as a moe variation of "です (Desu)". It should be noted that in many cases, moe characters (including Inazuma) use "なのです” in an ungrammatical way, which contributes to the intended cuteness.

She uses 僕 (boku) to address herself. Boku was mostly reserved for boys, and very rare among Japanese young girls, but is considered to be very cute when used by the latter. Sometimes paired with Yamashiro as she provided cover (and sunk as a result) for Shigure to escape the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Some suggest that Shigure might have PTSD over night battles, inferring from her quotes. According to history, both battles (Battle of Vella Gulf and Battle of Leyte Gulf), in which she lost all of her comrades (and in the case of Vella Gulf, her own little sister), occurred during the night. As a result, her tone and speech is reserved, somewhat demure and more saddened compared to most other kanmusu, although she is not without a positive side. After the Final Battle 2017 event, Shigure gets notably more cheerful in her new seasonal lines after overcoming her traumas over the Battle of Surigao Strait, implying she's moving on.

She exhibits carefree behavior, fortified by her frequent use of "っぽい" (Poi) which can come off as very casual. After her second remodel, she becomes very pugnacious.

Akagi is shown as a compassionate woman with a gentle, easy-going personality. She is a foil to Kaga, behaving openly and cheerfully; whereas Kaga often is seen with little to no emotion around others. A personality quirk notable with Akagi is her gluttonous side; most notably seen in the anime, when she will usually consume a larger portion of food than other kanmusu. Lots of fan art of Akagi depicts her gluttonous side and show her voracious appetite.

Kongou is hyperactive, very cheerful, loves to mix her Japanese sentences with random English words and is overly fond of her admiral. She loves black tea, on account of her construction in England. Ends many of her statements with "ネー" (ne) and "デース" (です/desu in English accent), usually in an exaggerated, whimsical manner.

Fubuki has an earnest and diligent personality. Though she lacks many personality quirks, it is seen in the anime that she takes her idol, Akagi, to high regard, dancing around in bliss after a simple pat on the head. In the 4-koma, it is revealed that Fubuki is able to speak Russian, and she does so fairly well; she even speaks it better than Verniy does. This is a reference to her voice actress, Sumire Uesaka, having a major in the Russian language. Despite this, Miyuki claims that she and Shirayuki could also do the same if they tried.

Very boisterous and a bit overconfident in contrast to her sister-ship Inazuma's timid behavior. Aspires to be an onee-san-like figure, as evidenced by her desire to be relied upon by the admiral. This trait which contrasts with the class' somewhat juvenile behavior is emphasized as her moé point in a similar fashion to Akatsuki.

Striving to be the onee-san to the Akatsuki class sisters, she can be quite assertive in being a so-called "First Class Lady" and is nicknamed "Lady" by fans due to it. Ironically, in fanarts, she can be particularly doting to Atlanta, one of the ships responsible for her historical sinking, and treats her like a big sister.

She's a polite and humble girl.

Her personality goes all over the place. Sometimes, she's a genuinely nice girl; other times, she trolls Abukuma. She often expresses her annoyance with the Destroyers. She is also likely to boast her abilities, such as refering herself as "Super Kitakami-sama" after remodeling. Despite the fact that she says she hates destroyers often, in the anime, she still helped Fubuki by teaching her about torpedoes. The nature of her relationship with Ooi varies but they are usually very close to each other.

Nagato serves as the Admiral's Secretary Ship with Mutsu always alongside her. She is calm and collected and carries a serious, intimidating air about her wherever she goes, making sure the other fleet girls abide by the Navy's rules. She shows great pride in herself as one of the "Big Seven" but is not unsympathetic, as she feigns ignorance when Fubuki, Yuudachi, and Mutsuki secretly take Yamato out of the Fleet's forward base on Truk Island onto the ocean once more on a boat and upon their return, tells them that dinner is ready instead. She also has a rather low tolerance for spicy foods; this is the sole reason as to why she let DesDiv6 win the curry competition instead of Ashigara as Nagato couldn't handle the heat of the latter's curry, to which Mutsu later teased her for. She is often the one in charge of issuing orders to the fleet and has a keen understanding of the Admiral's intentions even when the Admiral was missing and left behind but coded orders. Nagato is only seen in battle once, demonstrating impressive fire power and even kicking an oncoming Abyssal, during the anime's final battle against Midway Princess. She is the only fleet girl, other than Ooi, to actually use physical combat and take down Midway alongside Mutsu. Within the fandom, Nagato has been occasionally depicted as a lover of cute things, usually even subverting her personality in the process. While initially a fan depiction, this trait has since reached enough popularity to be semi-canonized through the anime adaptation, in a scene where she loses her serious demeanor and cuddles a squirrel while speaking in a rather cutesy way. This particular personality is commonly referred to as Nagamon, derived from an alternate reading of her character name.

She is infatuated with Kitakami, as expressed in her quotes and in her behavior in derivative media as well as in the anime adaptation. In the English dub of the anime, Ooi is much ruder when compared to her original counterpart, such as calling things insects when angered. Trivia

Mutsu is depicted as a foil to Nagato, being seductive and demure, instead of being serious. She, like various other shipgirls, has a catchphrase, with hers being "あら" (Ara), meaning "Oh my". In the anime, Mutsu is shown to be calm and collected in times of crisis and sadness. She can be seen comforting the Secretary Ship Nagato towards the end of Episode 3 after the Naval District's attempt at a surprise attack on W Island failed and a fellow fleet girl was sunk. As the anime progresses towards the middle of its season, she receives somewhat of a leap in screen time along with Nagato. She uses this screen time to repeatedly undo Nagato's cool and collected personality and to tease her. She repeatedly flirts with the Secretary Ship and she even went as far as to call Nagato, "Mine". She has openly admitted to Nagato that she holds affection/love for her. She is almost always with Nagato, with rare instances otherwise. There are no current instances where she has been seen alone alongside other fleet girls.
