Sixteen Ultimate students of Hope's Peak Academy were trapped after passing out on the first day of school, waking up in a locked building with no communication with the outside world. They were met by Monokuma, a black-and-white robot bear, a sadist and the host of the Killing School Life, who announced the rules: they were locked away for life, and the only way out was to kill a fellow student without being discovered in the Class Trial. Each murder was followed by an investigation, then a trial, where the guilty party was executed in a grotesque and sophisticated manner, while those who made mistakes were punished with death for everyone except the killer. Monokuma was not alive, but a controlled puppet, the person behind whom stood Junko Enoshima, the very same Ultimate Fashionista who turned out to be Ultimate Despair and the leader of the terrorists who destroyed the world. She erased the students' memories, locked them away, and broadcast the game to the entire world in order to destroy hope. In the finale, Makoto and the survivors give up on despair, Junko loses and commits suicide, and six (Makoto Naegi, Kyoko Kirigiri, Byakuya Togami, Toko Fukawa, Yasuhiro Hagakure, Aoi Asahina) leave the academy.

· Byakuya vs Makoto - Byakuya considers Makoto a worthless person, and Makoto's hopes drive the heir crazy. · Toko vs Aoi - Toko is jealous of Aoi for being so easygoing with people, and Aoi gets mad at Toko for being so self-deprecating. · Mondo vs. Ishimaru - constant fights: the biker hates discipline, the prefect - his anarchy, although both are just trying to seem cooler. · Leon vs. Everyone - Leon is rude to everyone because he is furious about his lack of freedom, and is especially irritated with Makoto for his calmness. · Celestia vs. Everyone - She manipulates everyone for fun, but Byakuya gets the most annoyed with her lies (he gets mad that someone lies better than him). · Junko vs. Everyone - She is the enemy of the entire class, her goal is to destroy their hope, especially Makoto.

Makoto Naegi is a stubborn optimist who believes in people and never gives up. His strength lies in his ordinariness and ability to listen. He is a little unsure, but inspires hope.

Kyoko Kirigiri is a cold analyst, afraid of her past, keeps her distance, but learns to trust, is logical, and hides her emotions behind a mask.

Byakuya Togami is an arrogant perfectionist who fears losing control and letting down his clan. He despises weakness and respects only those who break his expectations.

Toko Fukawa is a self-deprecating writer who hates herself and lives in fear of rejection, and her alter ego is the serial killer Sho.

Aoi Asahina is a sincere enthusiast who sees the good in people, follows her heart, chooses joy consciously, and is devoted to her friends to the end.

Yasuhiro Hagakure is a lazy egoist, afraid of responsibility, hides behind mysticism, is a coward, but wants to be believed.

Sayaka Maizono is secretive and ambitious, dreams of escaping fame, fears that she will not be loved simply as a person, and wears a mask of idealism.

Leon Kuwata is a rebel, running away from the talent that was imposed on him, rude and hot-tempered, angry at the world for what it decided for him, and dreaming of freedom.

Chihiro Fujisaki is vulnerable and shy, considers himself weak, wants to become stronger mentally, and is afraid of condemnation and rejection.

Mondo Owada is hot-tempered, uses anger as a defense against vulnerability, is afraid of appearing weak, but is loyal to his friends to the death.

Kiyotaka Ishimaru is a fanatic of rules, seeking salvation in order, hiding his insecurity and desire for recognition behind pathos.

Hifumi Yamada is an infantile escapist who escapes reality through anime, fears responsibility, craves recognition, but is not ready to leave his comfort zone.

Celestia Ludenberg is a pathological liar who lives in a fantasy world, manipulates for power, and really just wants to be important.
