Makoto Naegi (Ultimate Lucky Guy) is the main character. He's an ordinary, unremarkable guy who got into the academy through a lottery. Despite his title, he's incredibly unlucky, but his greatest strength is his unwavering optimism and faith in his friends. Kyoko Kirigiri (Absolute ???) is a mysterious, cold, and incredibly sensible girl. She has amnesia and no memory of her talent, but possesses phenomenal detective skills and assists Makoto in court cases. Byakuya Togami (the Ultimate Heir) is an arrogant and cynical wealthy man, the heir to a massive conglomerate. He views the Killing Game as an intellectual competition, disdains emotions, and considers himself superior to everyone else. Bright and eccentric characters Toko Fukawa (Absolute Literary Genius) is a dark, insecure, and socially awkward romance novelist. She is terrified of blood, darkness, and people, and is madly and unrequitedly in love with Byakuya. Aoi Asahina (Ultimate Swimmer) is an energetic, athletic, and very emotional girl. She loves donuts, takes tragedies to heart, and always tries to maintain a positive atmosphere. Yasuhiro Hagakure (Ultimate Shaman) is the oldest student (he repeated several years). He's a carefree, cowardly, and slightly dimwitted guy who predicts the future with an accuracy of only 30%. Strong in spirit (and body) Sakura Ogami (Ultimate Martial Artist) is a formidable-looking girl with massive muscles, but possesses a very noble, calm, and kind heart. She is Asahina's close friend. Mondo Oowada (Absolute Biker Leader) is an aggressive and rude man, the leader of the largest biker gang in Japan. He gets angry easily, but he honors his code and keeps his word. Kiyotaka Ishimaru (Absolute Duty Officer) is a fanatic about discipline, rules, and order. He's always shouting, demanding perfect behavior from everyone, and can't understand how anyone can be idle. Plot: A group of elite high school students (each of them an "Absolute" master in their field, from the Ultimate Baseball Player to the Ultimate Heir) are locked away in the elite academy "Hope's Peak". Game Rules: The sadistic robot bear Monokuma declares they'll be stuck here forever. The only way to escape is to commit the "perfect murder" of one of their classmates and avoid being caught.

Its design is brilliantly simple and immediately sets the right atmosphere. Monokuma is split evenly in half: Right side (white): looks like a regular, cute, classic teddy bear with a kind smile. It represents hope and innocence. Left side (black): Her appearance completely changes. Instead of her cute face, she has a sinister grin, and instead of her normal eye, she has a glowing red zigzag (shaped like the academy emblem). This half represents despair and malice. Character and behavior Monokuma is a walking foil. His personality swings from comical to downright creepy in a split second: Eccentricity and humor: He loves to joke, make funny faces, break the fourth wall, and act like a spoiled brat. He often performs entire comedy skits. Cruelty and sadism: Behind the cheerful teddy bear's mask lies a cold-blooded manipulator. He revels in the suffering of his students, delights in goading them to murder, and takes particular pleasure in personally carrying out elaborate executions (punishments) for those found guilty in class trials.
