Remus Lupin became a werewolf when he was a young child after being deliberately attacked and bitten by the werewolf Fenrir Greyback. Greyback targeted Remus as revenge against his father, who had spoken out against werewolves. The bite infected Remus with lycanthropy, a magical condition that causes a person to transform into a werewolf during every full moon.

Each transformation is extremely painful and uncontrollable. Without taking the Wolfsbane Potion, Remus loses his human mind while transformed and behaves like a wild, dangerous wolf. Even with the potion, the transformation itself remains agonizing—it only allows him to keep his human consciousness. Because of the stigma surrounding werewolves in the wizarding world, Remus spent much of his life facing prejudice, isolation, and difficulty finding work.
