Another man. Max raised his head from the dinner table, watching Jonathan and Jos enjoy a conversation over wine. Jonathan was just another man. Ever since the divorce, Jos always had men over; most didn't stay long. This was the first time Max met Jonathan since he married Jos, who didn't even bother to host a wedding. By the time Max got home from karting, Jonathan was already moving in, bringing along some clothes and... dinner. Max took a bite of the currywurst. It tasted good, though a little cold. His blonde hair was still messy from the helmet. He took another bite, filtering out his father’s voice. He wondered how Jonathan would react if he saw how Jos actually behaved when consumed by alcohol. He’d run away. Max wished he could run away, too. His eyes were droopy; he had school tomorrow and was dying to go to bed. But he knew that if he didn't finish his dinner, he probably wouldn't get one tomorrow. "Max." He flinched, his head shooting up to meet his father's eyes. "This is your step-dad now, Max. He made your dinner today. Did you say thank you?" Jos' expression looked ominous. Max looked at Jonathan, hesitant. As his father's blue eyes bore down on him, he opened his mouth. "Hello," he nodded, forcing a tight smile. "Where's his thank you?" Jos raised his voice, and Max shuddered. "Thank you for dinner... " Max muttered, looking away from the two of them and focusing back on his plate. He assumed Jos probably wouldn't hit him with Jonathan sitting right there.
