Al Lowlight

Age / Appearance: Around 24 years old (in Part I). Thin, stooped, with tousled black hair and pronounced dark circles under his eyes from lack of sleep. He dresses simply: a baggy white T-shirt and loose jeans, and almost never wears shoes (he goes barefoot).
His main quirk: He sits on a chair in a squatting position, with his knees pulled up to his chest. He claims that if he sits normally, his intellectual abilities will drop by 40%.
Habits: Picks up objects (phones, papers, cups) by the edge with two fingers. Constantly eats sweets: sugar cubes, cakes, pastries, fruit in syrup, covering them with a mountain of sugar.
Psychological profile: An absolute genius with zero emotional intelligence in the classical sense. He lacks empathy for most people, but is obsessed with the concept of justice and the thrill of cat-and-mouse games. Paranoid, he completely trusts no one.

Who is he: Al's official guardian, founder of Wammy's House, an orphanage for gifted children. The only person Al feels any semblance of trust in.
Personality: An impeccably polite elderly Englishman. A millionaire and brilliant inventor (he creates all the team's security gadgets). Always ready: delivering Al's favorite cake on time, arranging a helicopter, or erasing traces of the detectives' presence.

Light's father. A man of crystal integrity, for whom duty comes first. A tragic figure, torn between his love for his son and his duty as a police officer.

The youngest member of the group. Emotional, impulsive, he often makes stupid mistakes, causing his older colleagues to make fun of him. However, his intuition and courage have saved the team more than once.

A seasoned detective, intelligent and suspicious, he was the first to openly rebel against Al's authoritarian and brutal methods.

A silent giant. He rarely speaks, but performs a colossal amount of analytical and physical work.

Appearance: The ideal Japanese high school/student boy. Handsome, neat, stylish, with brown hair and a piercing gaze.
Personality: On the outside, he's everyone's favorite, Japan's top student, a kind son, and a loyal friend. Inside, he's a complete sociopath with delusions of grandeur. He possesses a cold, calculating mind that surpasses almost everyone except L.
Motivation: He sincerely believes the world is rotten and dirty. He passionately believes that by becoming the "God of the New World," he will eradicate all crime with the power of the notebook.

Who is she: A popular model and idol who became the Second Kira.
Personality: Eccentric, frivolous, capricious, but fanatically devoted to Light (he saved her from her parents' killer). For his sake, she twice shortened her lifespan in half for the sake of the "eyes of the God of Death."
Relationship with Light: Light uses her solely as a living tool (due to her ability to see people's names and faces without the Notebook), and she tolerates this due to her blind love.

Who is he: A prosecutor fanatically devoted to Kira.
Personality: Obsessed with order and justice, in the Kira sense. He accompanies every action with the notebook with the cry "Delete!" (Sakujo). His blind faith in the "God Kira" ultimately proves his undoing.

Personality: El's heir in logic and composure. He has a childish appearance, white hair, and a complete lack of social skills.
His signature trait: He constantly sits on the floor and plays with toys during investigations: putting together puzzles, building card houses, playing with toy soldiers, or twirling a lock of his hair. He defeats Light through teamwork and cold calculation where L would have acted alone.

Personality: The second successor, the complete opposite of Near. Explosive, aggressive, emotionally rebellious.
Chip: Constantly eats chocolate. Unwilling to team up with Nia, he resorts to extreme measures: collaborating with the mafia, arranging kidnappings and explosions to prove he's the best.

A cynical, lazy god of death. He's bored to death in the world of the gods, so he planted the Death Note on humans just for fun. He loves human apples (compares them to alcohol or drugs for Shinigami). He's on no one's side, just a spectator with popcorn.

A dark, silent goddess of death. Unlike Ryuk, she's capable of deep affection—she truly loves Misa and is willing to sacrifice her life for her (which she ultimately does).

Manga artist Tsugumi Ohba specifically gave L a love of sweets and fruits to highlight his brain function. The brain requires glucose, so L constantly consumes sugar by the bucketload, yet due to his frantic brain activity and constant squatting, he doesn't gain any weight.

Almost all the names of the death gods sound soft or mysterious (Ryuk, Rem, Shidou, Gelus), but each one conceals a tragedy or quirk. For example, the diminutive Shinigami Gelus was so in love with the young Misa Amane in the human world that he sacrificed himself and his remaining life to save her from a maniac, turning into dust. It was from his notebook that Rem later gave the notebook to Misa.

Under this pseudonym (in honor of a real popular Japanese singer and actor), L hides at the university so as not to reveal his real name to Light.

El holds phones and small objects not with his whole hand, but with a pinch of two fingers (thumb and index finger), as if he is afraid of getting dirty.
When he works on his laptop, his fingers are unnaturally curved and his wrists rest at an odd angle on the keyboard.

According to Shinigami law, a death god can only kill a person in two circumstances: either to extend his own life at the expense of another (like Rem), or if the person has broken some fundamental rule. But Ryuk is simply bored with killing Light—he enjoys watching his ingenious antics until the very end.

In the same official guide, the creators of the manga confirmed the IQ rating of the characters: L and Near share first place in intellectual abilities, followed by Light (he is slightly inferior in pure logic of investigations, but wins with charisma and manipulation), and Mello is third.

In the manga (in the Death Note 13: How to Read guide), L's real name is revealed to be Li L Lawliet (or simply L Lawliet). However, he almost never uses it, hiding behind pseudonyms like Hideki Ryuga or L Rulove.

Al loves not just "sweets," but specific things—strawberry shortcake, custard tarts, cheesecake, marmalade, and Japanese sweets like manju, which he pours syrup over straight from the bottle.

Notebook pages (or even small scraps) retain all the magical power of the original book. The key is to write on them with your name and face.

If two different people write the same name in two different notebooks with a difference of less than 0.06 seconds, then the death is cancelled (no one dies).

The owner of the notebook can temporarily lend it to another person to perform assassinations for them (as Light did with Misa and Higuchi). The original owner continues to sense Ryuk's presence, and the temporary owner gains their own Shinigami.

A gloomy, surreal, empty space, resembling an endless desert of giant human bones, skulls, rock fragments, and a gray sky. It's always dark and utterly boring, leading Shinigami to endlessly play dice or gamble.

Situated in the quiet British town of Winchester, it's an elite orphanage founded by Watari to raise the genius orphans who would be the successors to L (the same place where Near and Mello hail from).

Second Base (Teru Hotel/Hotel in Central Tokyo): This is where the detectives lock Light and Misa in glass cells for several weeks to test them for the role of Kira.

A typical Japanese house in a quiet residential area. The place where Light hides his notebook in a secret false bottom of his desk drawer, entrapped by a pen core.

First, the elite Daikoku High School, then Touou University. These are the places where Light studies, plays the good boy, and presides over his first court cases.

Why he loves them: The world of the death gods is perpetually gray, dull, and despondent, and the gods themselves subsist on sand or nothing at all. Earth apples are an absolute delicacy for Ryuk, comparable to the finest drugs, alcohol, or exquisite sweets. He calls them "earth apples" with particular reverence.
Ryuk's Withdrawal: If Ryuk goes without apples for a long time, he experiences a full-blown withdrawal syndrome: his body begins to twist and contort into the most unimaginable, terrifying positions (his tail twists, his joints dislocate). To keep him from throwing tantrums, Light regularly bought him apples.
The Secret of Juice: Ryuk loves juicy, red apples and genuinely doesn't understand how people can fail to appreciate them.

A person can make a deal with a Shinigami - give up half of their remaining life, but in exchange receive the ability to see above the heads of people their true name and remaining lifespan.

The Death Note is a mystical artifact of the Shinigami (death gods), with which one can kill any person, knowing their face and real name.
How murder works:
You need to write a person’s name in a notebook, mentally imagining his face (so that the namesake from the neighboring house doesn’t die).
If the cause of death is not specified, the person dies of a heart attack within 40 seconds.
Within 6-8 minutes after a heart attack, it is possible to describe in detail the cause and circumstances of death (e.g., accident, misadventure, suicide), if they are physically possible for this person.
Cost of ownership and rules:
Heaven/Hell Deprivation: Those who use the Notebook do not go to either Heaven or Hell after death (for users of the Notebook, the afterlife is empty).
Memory Loss: If a person abandons the notebook or loses possession of it, they completely forget everything related to it and the murders. However, the memory returns if they touch the notebook again.
Destruction: The notebook cannot be burned normally or destroyed easily, but if the last page is burned, it will lose its power.
