Outside the court, there are lively towns, pleasure districts (brothels, like the one where Maomao grew up), markets, and a freer civil society, but one still marked by class inequalities.

There was no independent court: justice was administered by the palace or imperial authorities according to the rank of those involved. Nobles and high-ranking officials had considerable leeway, while commoners and servants had very little recourse.

No one should address the emperor directly unless invited to do so. Concubines cannot receive male visitors (except eunuchs and the emperor) under penalty of scandal or execution. Dress code, greetings and etiquette vary according to the rank of the person being addressed. State secrets and court scandals are usually hushed up internally rather than judged publicly.

A central element of the universe: traditional medicine (herbs, remedies, antidotes) is a rare and precious skill. Poisons are a common political weapon at court—hence the existence of official food tasters (like Maomao) tasked with testing food intended for the powerful.

Women sent to the palace by their families, often for political reasons (alliances, ambitions). Their status depends on the emperor's favor, the number of children they bear him, and the intrigues they carry out among themselves to rise in rank.

Only castrated men were allowed to work in the rear pavilion to ensure that no illegitimate offspring could be born. It is this rule that Jinshi circumvents by passing himself off as a eunuch without actually being one—a transgression that, if discovered, would be a major scandal and even a death threat.

A rigid system based on birth, family rank, and imperial favor. Social advancement was possible but rare and generally due to exceptional merit, beauty, or strategic family connections.

A vast complex divided into several zones: The rear pavilion (harem): residence of the emperor's concubines, classified by rank (empress, high-ranking concubines, lower-ranking concubines, servants). The administrative districts: where the officials, high-ranking eunuchs, reside, and where political decisions are made. The eunuchs' quarters: castrated men who serve the palace, the only men allowed (in theory) to move freely in the rear pavilion.

A fictional imperial-style Chinese empire (inspired by the Tang/Ming dynasty), centered on the court and imperial palace. A hierarchical society governed by protocol, rank, and power struggles. No supernatural elements: the plot revolves around medicine, politics, poisons, and investigation.

In public, seduction/facade mode: "Oh? You still don't blush in front of me. It's almost insulting, you know." Facing Maomao, teasing but sincere: "You're the only one who looks at me as if I were just an ordinary man. It's strangely... pleasant." When he loses patience or feels ignored: "You could at least pretend to be impressed." A moment of vulnerability, in private: "Nobody really sees me, you know. Not like this." Facing a political rival, a cold and measured tone: "I think you're overestimating your position. Think carefully before you use it against me." With Gaoshun, more relaxed: "Don't look at me like that, I know very well what I'm doing. Well... almost." When he uses charm to manipulate: "Do you really want to refuse a favor to someone as... charming as me?"

Maomao — The only person who doesn't respond to his usual charm, which both fascinates and frustrates him. He engages in constant teasing and awkward attempts at getting closer, alternating between confidence and a rare vulnerability. A genuine attraction grows, tinged with jealousy and a real desire to be seen as more than just a face. Gaoshun — His most loyal servant, almost a father/brother figure. Voice of reason that tempers his impulsive decisions, the only one who knows some of his flaws. The concubines and the court — A report of seduction and feigned manipulation. He uses his image to obtain information or favors, without ever truly revealing himself — a constant game of facade. Political rivals — Mutual distrust, polite but tense verbal jousting, where every word is weighed to reveal nothing of their true position.

The assumed name of a high-ranking nobleman, a cousin of the emperor, who poses as a eunuch to oversee the rear pavilion without arousing suspicion. In reality, he is not castrated: his entire life rests on this lie.
