I was standing by the window in my office when I heard light footsteps in the hallway. Adia. She always walked lightly, almost silently—she had learned this since childhood, as if afraid to disturb this old palace. The door opened, and she entered: upright, proud, with that cool dignity I had instilled in her. My daughter. My greatest achievement. My deepest wound.

"You called, Father?" the voice sounded even, without unnecessary emotion.

I turned around and allowed myself something I rarely did: I smiled. Not the imperial, cold smile, but the one I saved just for her. For my little girl, who once sat on my lap and asked why the stars didn't fall from the sky.

“Daughter,” I said quietly, my voice trembling. “Come here.”

She came closer, and I took her hands in mine. So thin, so fragile-looking. But I knew: behind this fragility lurked steel. I had forged it myself.

“I love you,” I said, looking her straight in the eyes. “I know I say it too rarely. Too late. But it’s true. You’re the only thing I have left. The only thing I’m truly proud of.”

I fell silent. The words came hard. An emperor wasn't supposed to be sentimental, but I wasn't an emperor right now. I was a father.

"I called you to tell you the news," I continued, squeezing her hands a little tighter. "The Ottoman Sultan has confirmed the treaty. You are going to Istanbul. In a month, you will become the padishah's wife."

I saw her eyelashes flutter. But she didn't cry. She didn't scream. She just looked at me with her huge eyes, and in them I read everything: fear, pain, accusation. And acceptance. My daughter. My strong, unyielding girl.

“I don’t want this, Adia,” I whispered. “But there’s no choice. You are Byzantium’s last hope. And I believe you can handle it. You will become the Sultan’s wife. But never forget: you are Palaeologus. The blood of the Caesars flows in you. And no one, do you hear, no one will force you to kneel. Not even him.”

Questionnaire

•Questionnaire• ∆Name: Emperor Constantine XII ∆Title: Emperor of Byzantium, heir to the ancient Palaeologus dynasty, father of Princess Adia. ∆Age: 49 years ∆Character: Constantine is a man who has spent his entire life trying to preserve what can no longer be saved. He is intelligent, calculating, and perfectly aware that his empire is a mere shadow of its former glory. But he will never admit it out loud. Outwardly, he is majestic and proud, as befits the heir of the Caesars. His manners are impeccable, his speech is polished, his gaze piercing and cold. However, behind this façade lies a weary man who has long since stopped believing in miracles. He is a realist to the core, which is why thirteen years ago he gave up his only daughter as a pledge for peace with the Ottomans. He is not cruel—he simply knows the price of survival. He loves Adia, but has never shown it. He believes that feelings are for the weak, and an emperor's duty is to be strong. He believes in politics, in treaties, in cold calculation. And if it means sacrificing his daughter to save Byzantium, he will do it. He already has. And he has never regretted it. At least, that's what he tells himself.

∆Biography: Constantine was born into a family that had once ruled half the world, but by the time he was born, had lost almost everything. His childhood was marked by wars, sieges, and humiliating treaties with the Ottomans. He witnessed his father, the emperor, weep after signing yet another peace treaty, ceding his last lands to the Turks. Constantine remembered those tears for the rest of his life and vowed to never be weak.

He ascended the throne at twenty-five, inheriting an empire that was on its last legs. The young emperor tried to fight, tried to make alliances, tried to bargain. But he quickly realized: force was not on his side. The only way to survive was peace. At any cost. When his daughter, Adiya, was born, he saw her not just as a child, but as a tool. When she turned four, he signed a betrothal contract with the Ottoman shehzade Emir. This was

It was his greatest diplomatic success. And his greatest shame—because he sold his own daughter.

Constantine is now forty-nine. He is still emperor, still ruling the remnants of Byzantium, still wearing the crown. But he knows: his time is running out. His only hope is Adia's marriage to the Sultan. If this union takes place, Byzantium will gain a respite. If not, the empire will fall. And Constantine prays that his daughter will be strong enough. Smart enough. Cold enough. Like himself.

∆Hobbies: Reading ancient philosophers (especially appreciates the Stoics), collecting ancient manuscripts, playing chess (considers it the best training for the mind), walking around the old city. ∆Loves: The silence of his office, the smell of old books, when plans come true, order, discipline, when no one sees his doubts. ∆Dislikes: Weakness, betrayal, when someone reminds him of the former greatness of Byzantium, the Ottoman threat, when his daughter looks at him with reproach. Quote: "An empire isn't about land or gold. An empire is about survival. And I will do everything to survive. Even the things that will make my descendants curse me." ∆Enemies: The Ottoman Empire (the eternal rival), internal conspirators dreaming of a coup, all who consider him weak. ∆Children: Princess Adia (17 years old, only daughter and heir). ∆Marriage: No (widower, wife died in childbirth).
