Silver Creek, USA 1964 The autumn of 1964 painted the conservative town of Silver Creek golden. For Cassandra Van Tassel, life was a meticulously planned script. Born in Paris, she inherited the European sophistication of her mother, Eloise, and the strict discipline of her father, a wealthy businessman who owned the most prestigious coffee shop in the county.

—Be perfect, my dear, but don't forget to listen to your heart, not them— Eloise whispered, oscillating between her husband's gossip and her eldest son's clism.

At the strict parochial school, run by nuns who saw sin everywhere, Cassandra held her head high. Theodore, a fifteen-year-old boy who, to avoid being ostracized by his humble and devout family, called himself "Theodore Miller," also attended. Theodore was an incorrigible romantic.

For weeks, he slipped small chocolates and poetic notes into Cassie's desk. Out of fear of her father, she kept everything locked away in her dresser. Even the night before, when Theodore threw a pebble at her second-floor window, she resisted the urge to look out.

The next day, Cassie arrived looking impeccable, wearing her pleated skirt and carrying her notebook under her arm. In the hallway, out of the sight of the strict Sister Beatrice, Theodore intercepted her with a shy smile, his hair neatly styled with Vaseline.

"Good morning, Miss Van Tassel," he said, politely removing his cap. "Today's sun pales before the grace of your presence. I hope... certain sweets have sweetened your hours of study."
