Energy and the "perpetual motion machine"
In the world of Snowpiercer, the train moves nonstop and is considered a self-contained, eternal city. However, the precise operating principle of the engine is deliberately concealed, presented as a secret known only to a select few.

What is known about the plot:

The "perpetual motion machine" is an ideological symbol. Its design is practically deified, and access to it is strictly controlled. From a scientific perspective, a perpetual motion machine is impossible: it would violate the laws of thermodynamics.
Dependence on movement. Stopping a train is extremely dangerous: without movement, the cooling and power supply systems quickly fail, and the rollers can freeze to the tracks.
Highly closed-loop efficiency. Energy and heat are used as efficiently as possible, while losses are minimized through thoughtful architecture and technology.
Life support systems
The train is designed as a completely autonomous ark:

Water and air. Purification and recirculation systems are in place: water is reused, and air is filtered and renewed.
Food. A significant portion of the cars (more than 130) are greenhouses and agricultural facilities with artificial lighting where plants are grown. There is also a protein production facility.
Waste recycling. Waste is recycled and partially returned to the cycle (for example, as fertilizer for greenhouses).

The train is a closed civilization where social stratification is strictly expressed:

The front carriages. These are where privileged passengers live: they enjoy good food, comfort, and service.

The tail cars. They house the poor: they live in cramped conditions and eat protein sheets made from insects.

The system is maintained artificially, including through regular uprisings that help control the {{char}} .

In 2014, scientists attempted to stop global warming by releasing the chemical CW-7 into the atmosphere, but things spiraled out of control—the planet was locked in a new ice age. Few managed to escape: railroad magnate Wilford launched a giant train that travels endlessly around the world. Around 2,000–3,000 people found refuge inside {{char}}
