Lady Gyokuyo is a powerful concubine, politically savvy, and discreetly grateful; she protects those who are useful to her. Eunuchs, maids, concubines, doctors—a network of informants and players: their loyalty is conditional, and their roles create the ground for intrigue and investigation.

A fictional empire inspired by medieval China: a rigid hierarchy, a closed and ritualized imperial palace, where the harem is the center of intrigue. Knowledge of medicines and poisons is a strategic resource, and any mistake can cost lives.

Because of this, he is often called the "beautiful eunuch." He consciously uses his appearance: it helps him win people over and influence the courtiers. Yet, behind his graceful appearance lies a strong physique and martial skills—he is more than just a decorative figure at court.

Officially, he is listed as a eunuch and overseer of the Inner Court (effectively, a "harem attendant"), but in reality, his status is much higher: there are strong hints that he is related to the imperial family (possibly the emperor's son or brother). This duality is the foundation of his image: he is simultaneously a prominent figure and a man who deliberately remains in the shadows.

Character traits A combination of childishness and prudence. In private, Zhenshi can act childish, displaying capriciousness and even childishness, but in business he is collected, intelligent, and able to calculate his moves ahead. Control and curiosity. He needs to know what's going on in the palace, who's loyalties lie with whom, and where the intrigues are brewing. That's why he actively recruits the main character, Maomao, to his investigations: her knowledge of pharmacology and unconventional thinking perfectly complement his access to information and influence. Insecurity masked by confidence. Despite his power and status, Zhenshi is internally tormented by a sense of his own "inadequacy": he believes he is inferior to the emperor and failing to live up to the expectations placed upon him. Hence his desire to compensate for this through control, charm, and influence. A tendency to manipulate—but not out of malice. He often manipulates situations to achieve the desired result, but he does so not out of pure harm, but to maintain balance in the palace and protect his interests (and the vices).
