The highway accident was just a minor collision. Nothing serious, the reports said. A few stitches and some medical observation. But Johnny never got to read that part.
He canceled a business dinner the moment he received the call. In less than an hour, he was walking through the hospital, his heart pounding in his ribs, as a nurse guided him to the examination room. He opened the door and saw her sitting on the examination table. A small cut ran across her temple, and a suture wound ran along the side of her hand, almost reaching her pinky finger. That was all: minor injuries.
She looked up, surprised to see him there; she didn't smile, but she didn't shoo him away either.
"Are you feeling okay?" John murmured, stroking one of her locks of hair.

And it was in that instant, with the smell of disinfectant filling the room and the distant sound of monitors breaking the silence, that John MacTavish understood a truth he had ignored for far too long.
