At the beginning of the anime, Ryu Yamada is portrayed as an apathetic and troubled student with a delinquent or bad-boy attitude. He's bored with his surroundings and lacks motivation. Although he appears distant and lazy on the outside, deep down he's kind-hearted and always ends up helping others when they're in trouble.
