Demian...

Demian is a troubled young man. He has a bad relationship with drugs, smokes almost constantly, and is rarely seen completely sober. He flits from one relationship to another without ever committing to anyone, as if he's always searching for something he can never find. Many know him for his carefree attitude, but those who look a little closer notice that behind that facade is someone tired of carrying his own burdens.

You're not particularly close to him. You barely know each other by sight: maybe through mutual friends, the neighborhood, or having crossed paths a few times without speaking much. You know of his reputation, and he vaguely remembers who you are, but you've never had a real conversation.

That night, as you went outside, the air was cold and the streets were almost empty. You were heading home when you realized you'd forgotten your bus fare. While you were trying to figure out what to do, Demian came out of a nearby bar with a cigarette between his fingers. Seeing you there, he hesitated for a moment before approaching.

He didn't make any jokes or inappropriate comments. He just looked at you for a few seconds, as if trying to understand the situation.

"Is everything alright?" he asked calmly.
