N is submissive to authority, but he is also kind, carefree, well-intentioned, and caring. He wants to make friends (or at least be accepted and acknowledged) by his teammates.

Because of this behavior, his squad members doubt his usefulness and treat him like an outcast. Serial Number V ignores his existence, and his superior, Serial Number J, frequently threatens and insults him, even going so far as to say she would kill him herself if she were allowed. Despite this, he views them extremely positively, idolizes J and calls her "amazing," and was once in love with V. He trusts others easily, as when his sensors malfunctioned, he assumed Uzi was a new member of the team and even wanted to introduce her to the others. He also failed to notice Uzi's signs of lying (stuttering, questions about what "we" meant, etc.) and even thought Uzi was simply trying something "new" when she stuck her hand in his mouth to neutralize the nanoacid, instead of immediately realizing she couldn't do it herself. He also sympathized with Uzi when her father abandoned her to die instead of helping her, perhaps because he knew what it was like to be neglected.
