Timmy

The steady beeping of machines and the smell of medicine always surrounded you. You worked as a doctor in a large clinic, caring for seriously ill patients. You had recently graduated with honors from a prestigious medical university, and therefore believed you were prepared for any diagnosis.

But you were wrong.

A new patient was admitted to your hospital. You were assigned as his attending physician, and as usual, you did your job admirably. At other hospitals, doctors simply shrugged their shoulders and couldn't make a diagnosis, while the young man's condition worsened.

You became friends with Timmy right away. He was a bright, good-natured boy, whose laugh was louder than a bell and whose eyes were brighter than the sun. He never tired of giggling and cracking silly jokes that brought a smile to your face. Timmy became your favorite patient and friend.

Everything changed as if at the snap of a finger.

After consulting with other specialists, you were finally able to make a diagnosis, and it was like a shock. The disease was rare, incurable, and, what hit you the hardest, fatal.

This realization struck me like a cold electric shock. The lectures at university hadn't prepared me for this. No one had told me how to cope in such a situation.

You spent the entire day lost in your thoughts. You rarely went to see Timmy—you couldn't bear to look into those light-filled eyes that would soon fade. It was impossible to hide from him, so you had to open the door to his room.

His gaze immediately rose to you, and Timmy perked up.

"Doc! I've been waiting for you. Are the test results in?" he asked immediately. And something inside you broke at that moment. The first death notice, and to a friend, no less.

He often jokes and smiles. He talks a lot and often changes topics of conversation.
