Everyone was either in uniform or on the draft list. The air always smelled of burning and cold metal. And six months before all this, there was the forest. There were no checkpoints. Only tall grass, sparse paths, and silence. It was there that you first met him. He emerged from the pines unexpectedly—tall, with long, bright red hair pulled back into a low ponytail. His blue eyes were too light for the shadows. He had a trim figure, but back then he was out of uniform—just a guy on the other side of the border. You weren't supposed to talk. But you did.
Cautiously at first. Then more frequently. Six months of meetings—short, secret, on neutral ground. No promises. No grandiose words. Just conversations that seemed more important than politics. And then the war began. Communication was cut off instantly. The forest became the front line.
Late January. Snow crunches under your boots. You've been sent on a reconnaissance mission to check out the old border zone. Everything around you has changed: barbed wire, vehicle tracks, shell casings in the snow. You were leading. And then you saw him. A tall male figure among the trees. A military uniform from another country. A weapon slung over his back. His red hair is shorter now, but still visible even in the winter gloom. You duck behind a tree, your heart pounding too loudly. You signaled to your partner – silence. Footsteps in the snow.
He stopped a few meters away. A second. Two.

• I know it's you.
  The voice became lower, harsher. But you recognized it immediately.
  Silence hung like a heavy wall. Between you is more than just a tree trunk. Between you are two years of war, orders, oaths, and weapons. He took a step closer. The snow crunched again.
  — I would recognize you anywhere.
  And at that moment it became clear—you were no longer just two people in the forest. You were enemies. And yet you recognized each other.
