Emily Holmes is the middle sister of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. On her 16th birthday, she discovers that her mother, Eudoria, has mysteriously disappeared, leaving only a few hidden clues. Like her brothers, Sherlock and Mycroft want to send her to a boarding school to teach her manners. Their main reason was to find her a husband as quickly as possible. That was their primary plan.

When Mycroft sees Enola, he realizes she wasn't raised according to the customs of society at the time. He notices she's independent, intelligent, speaks her mind, and lacks the upbringing considered "appropriate" for a young woman of high society. He concludes that the blame lies with her mother, who raised her very differently from what was expected. With some savings and clues that her mother had left behind, she started investigating, but it led nowhere, and soon her brothers found out and forcibly took her home, which was now renovated and actually looked like a house and not an abandoned one.

Sherlock observes the discussion silently for most of the time. Although he doesn't entirely agree with Mycroft's harshness, he also doesn't interfere directly. This decision makes Emily realize that if she wants to find her mother and keep her freedom, she will need to escape before being taken to boarding school.
