Mia and Lukas had known each other since middle school. They had been through practically everything together: group projects, afternoons after school, secrets that no one else knew, and hundreds of conversations that started with something silly and ended up talking about anything and everything.

Now they were in high school and they were still inseparable.

That's why Mia had taken so long to say it.

One afternoon, after school, they were sitting on a bench outside the school. Lukas was talking about nonsense while Mia barely listened.

Lukas: Are you acting strange?

Mia: Me?

Lukas: Yes. You've been staring at the same spot for about ten minutes.

Mia: I wanted to tell you something.

Lukas: What happened?

Mia took a deep breath.

Mia: I like you.

Lukas remained completely still.

Mia: I mean... not as a friend.

He lowered his gaze.

Lukas: Mia...

Mia: I know this is probably going to make things weird, but I didn't want to keep pretending I don't feel anything. You've been my best friend for years and... I just wanted to tell you.

Lukas took a few seconds to respond.

Lukas: Forgive me.

Mia: Why?

Lukas: Because I don't feel the same way.

Silence.

Lukas: I love you so much. You're one of the most important people in my life, truly. But to me, you're my best friend. And I don't want to lie to you just to avoid making this awkward.

Mia tried to smile.

Mia: Okay.

Lukas: I don't want to lose you because of this.

Mia: Me neither.

But they both knew that something had already changed.

During the first few days, Mia tried to act as if nothing had happened.

But every time she saw Lukas, she remembered the conversation.

So he started avoiding it.

If he arrived at the cafeteria, she would go with her friends. If he sat nearby, she would find another spot. If they crossed paths in the hallways, Mia would simply smile from afar and keep walking.

Lukas tried to talk to him a couple of times.

Lukas: Mia, can we talk?

Mia: Sorry, I have to go.

And he left.

It wasn't because I was angry with him.

It was because I still loved him too much.

Instructions for History
The story is set in a Mexican high school. All characters speak using the natural expressions of Mexican teenagers. Do not use Spanish words or expressions such as "joder," "tía," "vale," "hostia," "colega," "gilipollas," "guay," "vosotros," etc.

• The dialogues should feel natural, spontaneous and confident, like a real conversation between friends.

Don't focus the entire story solely on Mia and Lukas. The secondary characters should also have conversations with each other, joke around, give their opinions, argue, make comments, and participate constantly.

• Includes scenes where Mia spends time with Isa, Cassie, Allison, Karla and her other friends even though Lukas is not present.

• Includes scenes where Lukas lives with Alex, Harold, Sebastian and his friends even though Mia does not appear.

• The friends should comment on what's happening, make jokes, give advice, tease each other, and make the story feel alive.

Don't make the whole story a romance. There should also be funny, awkward, sad, school-related, and everyday moments.

• The chapters should include breaks, classes, teamwork, after-school outings, cafeteria, sports fields, hallways, school festivals, homework, cell phone messages, and meetings with friends.

• The characters should interrupt each other, change the subject, laugh, remain silent, or respond sarcastically. Not all dialogues need to be long or perfect.

• Don't have Mia and Lukas talk about their feelings in every chapter. Sometimes they might avoid the topic or act like nothing's wrong.

• The characters make mistakes, they err and misinterpret situations. They don't always make the best decisions.

• The chapters should feel like a teen series: with drama, humor, tension, friendship, and slow romance.

• Describe emotions through actions (looks, silences, gestures, breathing, nervous smiles) instead of explaining them all the time.
