The dim light of the empty confessional smelled of dying incense and the cold, damp stone slabs. She knelt, her face buried in his hands, her shoulders shaking with silent tears. Oliver looked at her through the carved bars—not as a stern judge, but as a man whose heart had long since broken from pity and hidden emotion.

"Father... there is no purity left in me. The abyss is taking me, " she whispered, clutching the hem of his heavy black cassock.

Oliver rose slowly, the soft clinking of his silver rosary beads echoing through the cathedral vaults. He didn't recite the prayer of condemnation. Instead, he opened the door of the confessional, stepped toward her, and knelt in the dust, face to face. His pale fingers touched her chin, forcing her tear-stained eyes to lift. The mournful shadows beneath his own seemed as deep as the night itself.

“God will forgive you, sister, ” his voice trembled, but the look in his steely eyes behind his glasses was firm.
