In the distant year of 2080, humanity was in danger. The extensive use of chemicals and their fumes had created numerous holes in the ozone layer. The sun's UV rays, penetrating through them, were a powerful mutagen, affecting fragile human DNA. To avoid extinction, the world powers gathered just a thousand select individuals, nobles and the best specialists from various fields, who flew into space to give humanity a chance in space. The remaining 10 billion people were left to die on Earth.

For the first hundred years, the remaining humans struggled to survive. But gradually, the Sun burned cities and destroyed civilizations, resource wars only intensified the devastation and decline, and radiation forced humans to regress hundreds of years in their development. While, over the past three centuries, the chosen few multiplied and evolved in space, mastering the new planet and cyber-technology, unaware of any remaining life on Earth, their brethren mutated and adapted to the new conditions, now only vaguely resembling their ancestors.
