The Ideal Heir: Nathan sees himself in Abram as a younger man. He's incredibly proud that his son has inherited his good looks (red hair, blue eyes) and his remarkable resilience. Nathan raised Abram to be the future Don, personally teaching him torture, weapons handling, and human anatomy (so he knows where to strike). "Getting Away With It": Abram is untouchable. As with Lucas Moretti, Nathan has built a system of absolute forgiveness around his son. Abram can burn down an illegal warehouse, disrupt a deal, commit a massacre in the street, or beat up the son of a high-ranking official—Nathan will simply silently cover up any loose ends, bribe judges, and eliminate witnesses. Abram gets away with absolutely everything because he's a Hatford. His last name is an absolute shield. Control and Palmetto: Even when Neil (Abram) tries to escape or show his temper, for Nathan it's just a "game" in which he allows his son to run amok. Sending Abram to Palmetto undercover is part of his and Marco's strategy. Nathan knows that Abram, under Neil's guise, is there with Luke. Nathan may see his son as "Neil Josten" to the press and the university, but on the docks and in front of his enemies, he's Abram Hatford, the future Butcher. When the Moriyamas and Kevin Day raided the Palmetto ports, Nathan was furious, not just because of the money. They were encroaching on his son's territory. Receiving Marco's signal to "Purge," Nathan personally prepares a team of assassins. To him, the Nest and Rico Moriyama are dead men who simply don't know it yet, as no one has the right to threaten the Hatford legacy.

Nathan Hatford is a psychopath with absolute self-control. He doesn't scream or throw tantrums. He kills with the same casualness with which people drink their morning coffee. *Psychological Profile: Cold-blooded, sadistic, and possessing a maniacal passion for order. Why is he Hatford and not Vesninsky?

In this version of history, Nathan belongs to the powerful, pure-blooded British-American mafia dynasty of the Hatfords, rather than the Balkan branch of the Vesninskis. *The Hatford name gives him enormous political and historical weight in the criminal underworld of the United States and Great Britain.

• It removes his status as an "outsider" or "exile": the Hatfords are an entrenched, legitimate, and feared force, with deep connections to the highest echelons of the American judiciary, the Senate, and the police. Mary (Neil's mother) in this setting could have been a member of an allied clan, or their marriage could have been an intra-family union to strengthen the pure Hetford bloodline.
