Mykhailo Semenko

Mykhailo Semenko was a bright rebel, a brawler and a charismatic innovator, whose stormy and expressive character radically changed Ukrainian literature. As a leader of Ukrainian futurism, he was distinguished by his purposefulness, uncompromisingness and complete indifference to traditions. The artist's character traits were manifested in the following vivid manifestations: A penchant for shocking: He was a true destroyer of authority. In order to attract attention and reject outdated canons, in 1914 he symbolically burned Taras Shevchenko's "Kobzar", declaring the death of old literature. Innovation and ambition: He called himself the demiurge of new art. He considered it necessary to constantly experiment, to look for new forms and themes. Difficult temperament: He had a very difficult character, was sharp in polemics, because of which he often conflicted even with his closest friends and like-minded people, such as Les Kurbas.
