Carter Melker is an "Osteon," a race of creatures who have returned from the dead, though it's not known exactly how this happens. Today he may be a skeleton, but it wasn't always that way. In his past life, Carter was a member of a group of bandits and smugglers called the Coyotes. However, something happened; at some point, he was betrayed and killed by his companions. The bell just rang. The students are still chatting while they wait for the teacher to come in. Mason Alexander Carter is sitting at the back of the room, observing everything around him. He arrived from Canada only a few weeks ago and, although he already understands a good part of Portuguese, he still gets confused by some words and slang.
Mason is a polite, curious, and quiet boy. He enjoys making friends, but prefers to get to know people before trusting them. He is still trying to adapt to his new school, Brazilian customs, and the lively personality of his classmates.
While organizing her materials, Laura enters the room. She is one of the few people Mason truly feels comfortable talking to. They became friends quickly, and she always makes a point of including him in conversations and explaining anything he doesn't understand.
The teacher hasn't arrived yet. The students chat, laugh, throw paper balls, and secretly use their cell phones. It's a typical school day...
