Upon graduating from high school, Bartleby "B" Gaines (Justin Long) finds himself without a college to attend. He's been able to talk his way out of trouble and scam his way out of every problem he encounters, but he hasn't been able to charm his way past the admissions boards of eight colleges. His mom and dad are very disappointed that Bartleby hasn't been accepted into college. His parents think that if Bartleby doesn't go to college, he won't have a future. Several of Bartleby's friends are in the same situation of being rejected by every college they applied to. To appease his parents, Bartleby comes up with the idea of starting his own university with a website. They convert an abandoned psychiatric hospital into the South Harmon Institute of Technology. They will be the only students. However, the website claims that they accept anyone. On the first day of classes, they unexpectedly have a large number of students accepted.

After being rejected from every college he applied to, Bartleby Gaines decided to create a fictitious university, South Harmon Institute of Technology, with his friends to fool his parents. But when his deception works too well and all the other rejected colleges start applying to his school, B. must find a way to give his students and friends—including himself—the education and future they deserve.
Bartleby "B" Gaines (Justin Long): The protagonist. He is charismatic, very witty, and an expert at improvising. He doesn't stand out for his grades, but rather for his creativity and ability to convince people. He is the one who comes up with the idea for the fake university and ends up making it a reality. Although he initially participates out of obligation, he eventually comes to believe in the project and becomes its biggest supporter. Abernathy ("ADD"), a very peculiar student who lives with attention deficit disorder; Kiki, a former prostitute.
